About Kathleen Barron
As a family lawyer, I represented hundreds of clients over the years in marital and non-marital disputes over custody and visitation, property and debt division, and family support issues. After being involved in innumerable contested divorce cases, many of which went to trial, I decided to look at alternative means of dispute resolution for families.
I am convinced that there is a better process for divorcing couples than litigation. I trained as a family law mediator in 2008, and as a collaborative lawyer in 2010. I am excited about offering alternative means of family dispute resolution to residents in the Mat-Su Valley. Both mediation and the collaborative law process offer families the chance to dissolve their relationships without the typical adversarial procedures and money drain of contested divorces.
I was born and raised in Laurel, Maryland. After graduating from the University of Maryland and University of Maryland Law School, my sense of adventure brought me to Alaska in 1979. I settled in the Mat-Su Valley in 1982, and began my practice in the area of family law. I worked first in the Law Office of Jean Schanen as an associate, then opened my own office in 1985.
I am married with two grown sons. My husband and I met while climbing Pioneer Peak. We spend much of our spare time hiking and backpacking around Alaska.
